Case Study: Large Format Metal Etching
For this challenging 24" x 36" metal etching project, I developed my drawing using a dry point needle on a prepared steel plate. The plate is etched in copper sulphate solution, which allows the lines to deepen, followed by a series of immersions in the solution which adds tone and depth to the image. Final print requires applying ink to the plate, wiping the excess, and printing on a manually operated etching press. The entire process of this piece took a full month of work. Thanks to Maestro Oswaldo Ramirez at the Taller de Artes Plásticas Rufino Tamayo in Oaxaca, Mexico for his encouragement and support.
